The project implemented by the Vanuatu Business Resilience Council (VBRC) aims to meet the climate resilience and capacity building needs of local communities in Vanuatu to lead coral reef replanting and restoration activities.
The project will establish or strengthen existing community volunteer groups around Vanuatu that engage in marine conservation and protection activities to enable sustainable operations through strong partnerships between the private sector and local communities. Both theoretical and practical hands on training will be conducted with different volunteer groups and private sector stakeholders to ensure that they have the critical skills in coral nurseries development and management, coral replanting and monitoring. The four key project activities to be delivered include:
- Establish coral nurseries in 7 different local communities;
- Transplant coral seedlings onto damaged reefs;
- Community training activities;
- Development of visibility and communications materials to increase awareness and appreciation of the importance of healthy coral reefs.
Project objectives?
- Local stakeholders have access to resources to participate in replanting and rehabilitating damaged coral reefs;
- Communities and the private sector understand the importance of healthy coral reefs and have the skills to be able to rehabilitate their coral reefs.
