RESTORE: Restoring ecosystems for sustainable, transformative, and resilient communities

On World Mangrove Day, the Kiwa RESTORE Project marks a significant milestone in Navitilevu Bay, Fiji. Three of five targeted restoration sites are now complete, with 15.47 hectares of mangroves restored as part of a broader 20-hectare goal spanning Fiji, Samoa and Timor-Leste.
Implemented by Conservation International and supported by the Kiwa Initiative, this project demonstrates the power of community-centred, Nature-based Solutions to deliver measurable outcomes for coastal resilience and biodiversity. Mangroves are among the most carbon-dense ecosystems on Earth and serve as critical buffers against storm surges and coastal erosion — pressures that are intensifying across Pacific Island communities as the climate changes.
