PEBACC +: Scaling-up ecosystem-based adaptation to climate change in the Pacific Islands

More than 1,600 trees have been planted at Aku Farm in Port Vila as part of the PEBACC+ project, with support from the Kiwa Initiative. Among the species introduced: whitewood, mahogany, and native Vanuatu trees. This reforestation effort is part of a broader strategy for ecosystem-based climate adaptation.
But planting is just the beginning. A recent stocktake revealed that 26% of the site still requires regular maintenance, including weeding and pest control, to ensure the survival of the young trees.
This is where the community-based approach truly matters. The project actively involves local residents, women, and youth in the sustainable management of their environment.
“We’re not just planting trees. We’re growing tomorrow’s stewards,” says William Bani, PEBACC+ Country Coordinator.
