RESTORE: Restoring ecosystems for sustainable, transformative, and resilient communities

In early December (3–9), the Kiwa RESTORE project, implemented by Conservation International Timor-Leste, carried out participatory zoning and mapping sessions to support mangrove restoration. Conducted in collaboration with municipal MPA management committees and forestry rangers, the activities brought together communities from Batugade, Sanirin and Aidabaleten (Bobonaro Municipality) and Ulmera (Liquiça Municipality).
Held at Community Conservation Group centres, the sessions enabled communities to assess the condition of coastal and marine areas, identify degraded zones and define land-use plans structured into four categories: livelihood zones, protected zones, restoration zones and no-take areas (bandu). Discussions also focused on strengthening traditional regulations such as tarabandu. All community plans will be consolidated into a Municipal Marine Protected Area Management Plan, improving coordination and ensuring the long-term protection of coastal and marine ecosystems while supporting local livelihoods.
