The Kiwa Initiative’s WISH+ project presented at the World One Heath Congress in Cape Town, South Africa!
30 September 2024

At the World One Health Congress just held in South Africa, @WCS - Wildlife Conservation Society member, Dr. Alice Latinne, presented the Watershed Interventions for Systems Health - Plus (WISH+), project supported by the Kiwa Initiative.
This project aims to implement integrated watershed management for biodiversity, climate resilience and human health co-benefits in Fiji, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.
- The aim: to reduce the risk of the spread of water-related diseases, accentuated by climate change and ecosystem degradation in rural areas. Extreme events such as climate change and deforestation amplify these risks, particularly in rural areas where water and sanitation infrastructures are inadequate.
- The actions: WISH+ carries out interventions in 41 communities to improve water and sanitation systems, manage land sustainably and plan watersheds comprehensively. Of the 339 priority actions identified, 168 interventions have already been implemented, notably in water systems management and land planning.
- Results: Interventions have reduced the risk of water-borne diseases and strengthened ecosystem resilience.
This project embodies the importance of local and sustainable solutions to improve the health of populations and protect the environment in the face of climate risks through Nature-based Solutions (NbS).
