Follow-up to the project:
SARA, safeguarding, restoration and adaptation of seabird colonies and associated ecosystem services

Great news for biodiversity: Deverd Islet, the last rat-infested islet in the “Northwest Islets” Important Bird Area, has been confirmed rat-free, two years after its 2023 eradication by North Province rangers and Bird Conservation New Caledonia, under the Kiwa Initiative SARA project.
This is a major step forward for the protection of seabirds, especially the iconic Nereis tern.
Thanks to lagoon users for their patience, and let’s all stay vigilant to prevent any return!
