New Caledonia: the regional Kiwa PEBACC+ project partners with the FFNC

The Kiwa PEBACC+ project is partnering with the Fédération de la Faune et de la Chasse de Nouvelle-Calédonie (FFCN), which will serve as the implementing agency for a field demonstration initiative covering 4,000 hectares in the commune of Kouaoua. The project aims to strengthen ecosystem resilience and protect forests, soils, crops, and water resources in the face of climate change.

The initiative is co-funded by the Kiwa Initiative and the FFEM, with significant support from the Agence Rurale. The Northern Province, responsible for deer management, is also supporting implementation, while ANCB contributes to data analysis.

Three tribes — Konoyes-Shaoué, Ouerou Pimet, and Mechin — are fully involved. Their hunters, trained through the project, now operate as regulation agents. Of the 17 planned sessions, 15 have already been carried out, resulting in the removal of 904 deer and 292 pigs. These actions directly contribute to ecosystem restoration, reducing pressure on forests and securing the valley’s drinking-water catchment.

The project is scheduled to be completed by December this year.
