To address this, the Kiwa Pacific Organic Learning Farms Network (POLFN) regional project , in partnership with Nauru’s Departments of Environment and Agriculture and supported by the Kiwa Initiative, carried out innovative farmer-led research.
Trials compared desalinated vs. rainwater, and raised vs. non-raised beds, for growing Chinese cabbage. Results showed that raised beds irrigated with desalinated water produced the highest yields, with stronger growth and heavier harvest weights, without compromising nutritional value.
These findings demonstrate that simple, affordable Nature-based solutions can enhance food sovereignty and climate resilience for island communities.
