Community ownership and partnership are crucial for short-term projects that yield long-term benefits. This was highlighted at the first PEBACC+ National Project Steering Committee meeting in Fiji.
The committee, which includes community leaders like the Mata ni Tikinas, is dedicated to overseeing the PEBACC+ Project's performance and quality. Key discussions included the protection of Taveuni's Forest Reserve and holding accountable those encroaching on this ‘Blue Line’ boundary.
The achievements discussed during the Committe are:
- Completion of inception workshops at community and national levels
- Free Prior and Informed Consent secured in 13 communities
- 30 hectares of community reforestation planting
- Support for organic farmers and youth and women mangrove planting programs
- Submission and approval of the National Blue Town Framework
