Communities in South Malekula strengthened to safeguard natural resources
Follow-up to the project:
Empowering community resilience through reforestation and coral reef restoration in Vanuatu

In September 2023, this project led by LAMACCA, facilitated the establishment of seven new conservation sites in South Malekula through capacity-building training for community conservation and environment committees.
The first session in Lamap gathered 25 participants, including the Lamap Conservation Committee and local leaders, to learn about dispute resolution and sustainable resource management. Led by Project Manager Peter Onis, with Elder Joseph Soko and Chief Hippolyte Lockvaro, the training culminated in a site visit to the Lamap Nanamor Conservation Area and the installation of a new signboard, which inspired the identification of three additional conservation sites.
Subsequent sessions took place on Maskylene Island, engaging the Maskylene and Avock Island Conservation Committees, and in Hokai village, where conservation committees from Hokai, Achamb Island, and Varu village selected a new protected area.
Across the three days, seven signboards were installed to mark the boundaries of the conservation areas, signaling a collective effort to safeguard marine and natural resources.
This project led by LAMACCA, aims to support over 30 communities, covering 5,000 hectares, by promoting education on environmental preservation, sustainable practices, and biodiversity. The project includes planting 3,000 trees, restoring coral reefs, and establishing five additional conservation sites, contributing to the long-term resilience of ecosystems and livelihoods.
