Kiwa Initiative launches a Pacific-wide campaign to strengthen understanding of Nature-based Solutions

To celebrate its fifth anniversary, the Kiwa Initiative is launching a bilingual (French/English) awareness campaign aimed at strengthening understanding of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) among Pacific communities and practitioners.
Led by SPREP and the Pacific Community (SPC), this three-month campaign highlights the growing use of NbS across the region and presents practical tools to protect, manage, and restore ecosystems facing climate-related challenges such as coastal erosion, food and water insecurity, and biodiversity loss.
Resources developed as part of the campaign include:
- An information factsheet titled Supporting resilience and wellbeing through Pacific Islands Nature-based Solutions;
- Five short educational videos explaining NbS through real examples related to human rights, invasive species, coastal protection, freshwater, and fisheries;
- A series of 20 visuals illustrating ecosystem-based approaches, traditional knowledge, forest restoration, invasive species management, and the role of communities in environmental projects.
Since 2020, more than 41 Kiwa-supported projects have helped strengthen livelihoods, promote gender equality, and restore or protect ecosystems across over 300 sites in 17 Pacific Island countries and territories, reaching more than 220,000 beneficiaries.
“This campaign will help communities and practitioners recognise how applying Nature-based Solutions in their daily lives can reduce the impacts of climate change,” said Dr Rebecca Stirnemann, Kiwa Project Development Coordinator at SPC.
“Over the past five years, thanks to the involvement of partners and local communities, the Kiwa Initiative has built solid, practical experience in implementing NbS for climate adaptation. The next step will focus on strengthening regional capacities to scale up these actions and ensure long-term impact,” said Aurélie Ahmim-Richard, Regional Policy Officer on Biodiversity and Climate at AFD Pacific regional office.
“Kiwa’s collaborative approach demonstrates the power of regional cooperation. Together, we are positioning the Pacific as a global leader in Nature-based Solutions,” added Angelica Salele-Sefo, Kiwa Project Development Coordinator at SPREP.
The campaign will run from November 2025 to January 2026, with all new materials available on the SPREP, SPC, and Kiwa Initiative websites and social media channels.
