In 2025, the Kiwa Initiative celebrates five years of action in the Pacific!

On 31 March 2020, a unique initiative was launched with a clear ambition: to support Pacific Island countries and territories in facing climate challenges by investing in Nature-based Solutions.
Today, the Kiwa Initiative celebrates five years of collective mobilisation, marked by tangible actions on the ground, shared successes, and a growing impact on communities and ecosystems.
A bold vision that has become reality
Since its launch, the Kiwa Initiative has grown, evolved, and multiplied its impact, becoming a flagship programme for climate resilience in the Pacific.
In five years, 24 projects have been implemented – 7 at regional level and 17 at local level – across 16 Pacific Island countries and territories, including New Caledonia, French Polynesia and Wallis and Futuna.
Over 160,000 people have directly or indirectly benefited from activities such as reforestation, sustainable natural resource management, coral reef restoration, and agroecology.
Thanks to the combined efforts of project leaders and technical partners, 22,000 hectares are now under sustainable management, and 6,000 hectares of biodiversity have been restored or protected — a true testament to the Initiative’s commitment.
Behind these figures are communities, families, fishers, farmers and local actors whose daily lives have improved through these projects.
A collective endeavour driven by committed stakeholders
The success of the Kiwa Initiative is rooted in an unprecedented collaboration between a wide range of sustainable development actors:
- Local communities, at the heart of each project, who share their knowledge and traditions to co-develop tailored and sustainable solutions.
- Project leaders, who turn ideas into concrete actions on the ground.
- Technical experts, who strengthen local capacities through their expertise.
- Donors – France, the European Union, New Zealand, Australia and Canada – who believed in this vision and backed it with total funding now reaching €77 million, a 149.5% increase since 2020.
- Implementing partners: @IUCN, @SPC and @SPREP, who support and structure the projects.
Celebrating these five years is above all a way to look to the future. The climate challenge remains immense, and Nature-based Solutions have never been more essential in addressing it.
The Kiwa Initiative will continue to evolve, learn, and support a fair and sustainable ecological transition for the Pacific Islands.
A heartfelt thank you to all those who bring the Kiwa Initiative to life every day!
