Solutions
through the Kiwa Initiative

This project began with a simple conviction: that the dignity of a gaze speaks louder than any statistic. The portraits gathered here were made as a team effort - often with nothing more than a mobile phone - by the protagonists themselves and by local teams, in Pacific countries and territories reached by the Kiwa Initiative.
Black and white is not an aesthetic choice but a gesture: to strip the image of everything superfluous, keeping only what matters: a face, a gaze, a presence. In this documentary tradition, each portrait tells less a story of catastrophe than one of response: of women and men who, on the front line of climate change, invent new ways, every day, to hold on and to pass things on.
A leaf, a plant, a fish held at arm's length: these simple gestures speak to the bond between these communities and their islands. They are not victims being photographed, but living forces being listened to — carriers of knowledge, culture, and of what comes next.
The long conversations held with each of them extend the image into words: they situate it, give it nuance, and give a human face to the outcomes of a regional initiative carried forward, on the ground, by those who make it live.
